BACHATA

A partner social dance that originated from the Dominican Republic. Bachata is danced to bachata music, which has a variety of influences and rhythms, but especially developed out of the bolero. The bolero in Latin culture has traditionally been a romantic music, dealing with themes like deception and lost love. Traditionally, a bachatero sings about pain and trouble, followed by finding solace in alcohol. Nowadays, bachata dance is most commonly recognized as a sensual, intimate, relaxed dance with hip motion. Although, it has widespread popularity as a “sexual and intimate” dance, there are many styles or ways to dance bachata. The character of the dance can change based on the song, and can be danced with syncopated footwork and turn patterns.

BREAKING

Breaking (break dance) is a street dance style that originated as part of hip-hop culture among African-American and Latino-American youth in New York in the early 1970s. Breaking is typically danced to hip-hop, funk music, and especially breakbeats, although modern trends allow for much wider varieties of music along certain ranges of tempo and beat patterns. Breaking consists of four main elements: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes.

Someone that breaks is called a b-boy, b-girl, or breaker. Although the term “breakdance” is frequently used to refer to the dance, “b-boying” and “breaking” are the original terms. The majority of the pioneers and most notable practitioners prefer these original terms.
